Computer forensics is both an art and a science. The science uses sound and proven methods using hardware and software to acquire and examine data from a variety of products that store digital data. Any device that can store electronic data is capable of being forensically examined. The art is the forensic examiner's knowledge of how to use a variety of forensic hardware, software, interpret and verify results, produce meaningful reports and provide expert testimony that is easily understood by attorneys, judges and juries.

Our cellular phone forensics can process over 3,000 different phone models using the same equipment commonly used by both federal and local law enforcement. GPS units can also be processed to obtain historical information. Data extracted from GPS devices can include coordinates, date/time, speed when travelling, routes traveled, starting and ending points, points of interest and more.
In June of 2013 the news media release information the National Security Administration (NSA) is gathering information on millions of Verizon cellular customers. While they claim the data only contains phone numbers, time of the call and duration, the data we obtain from a subpoena for subscriber information shows much more data. There is much more information and analysis involved in correctly producing a map and forming conclusions.
Data acquisition is the process of making a forensic image from computer media such as a hard drive, thumb drive, CDROM, removable hard drives, thumb drives, servers and other media that stores electronic data including gaming consoles and other devices. The forensic image is made using specialized hardware that prevents any data from being written to the source media so it remains pristine.
